The end of the Appalachian Trail, Baxter State Park, Maine
This photograph was taken the minute of sunrise, in Baxter State Park, standing on the edge of Togue Pond, where I went to Girl Scout Camp. Camp Natarswi is in Millinocket, Maine: a true wilderness paradise, providing a one-of-a-kind, rustic Maine outdoor experience, with spectacular views of Mt. Katahdin.
This shows Baxter Peak, the top Mount Katahdin, “The Great Mountain”, the northern end of the Appalachian Trail. It is the world's longest hiking-only footpath, almost 2,200 miles (3,540 km) between Springer Mountain, Georgia and Mount Katahdin, Maine. Leaving the last 100 mile of wilderness, hikers enter Baxter State Park, follow the noisy Nesowadnehunk Stream to Katahdin Stream Campground, knowing with only 10 miles left of their journey, they will reach Baxter Peak, the emotional end.
